What is UAP? Meaning, official definition, and why the term replaced UFO

Plain meaning

UAP is best understood as a neutral working label. It is used when a sighting, sensor return, video, radar track, or multi-source report cannot be confidently matched to a known aircraft, drone, balloon, satellite, meteor, weather effect, optical artifact, or other ordinary cause at the time of review.

The word matters because it keeps the investigation open. A report can be important for aviation safety, national security, sensor reliability, public communication, or scientific data quality even when there is no evidence of extraterrestrial origin.

Official usage

U.S. government usage expanded the phrase from unidentified aerial phenomena to unidentified anomalous phenomena. AARO describes UAP in all-domain terms, including airborne, seaborne, spaceborne, and transmedium detections that are not yet attributable to known actors or readily understood by sensors or observers.

NASA uses a scientific framing: UAP are observations of events that cannot be identified as aircraft or known natural phenomena from the available data. That wording puts the emphasis on data collection, calibration, repeatability, and transparent analysis.

How to read a UAP claim

A useful archive page should not ask only whether a case is real or fake. It should ask what was observed, who recorded it, which instruments were involved, whether original files are available, what ordinary explanations have been tested, and what would change the assessment.
